Socorro McAuliffe

In December, 2003, an acquaintance invited Socorro to the Friday night community dinner at College Avenue. Being sad and lonely that day, she came, mainly to be around people. Over time, she became a regular diner. One night, the cooking team was short-staffed and she volunteered to help. "I had wanted to help for some time, and was glad to be asked. I had worked at another soup kitchen, and I could sense this meal was special, made with love and care."

Socorro had a strong desire for community. Numerous personal invites from the pastor eventually got her involved in other activities at College Avenue, including senior outings and the Wednesday Adult Center. However, being Roman Catholic, she wasn't sure of her association with the church. "I was waffling as to where I belonged. Although I kept attending Catholic church and several charismatic prayer groups, I had become anonymous in those communities for the last 20 years."

"I continued asking, 'Where do I belong?, and thoughts of faith based community kept coming up." Her desire for resolution lasted many months until she finally got her answer. "I kept hearing a voice telling me to go around the corner. You are going to be all right around the corner." Resolve finally occurred while attending a Cursillo, and she rededicated herself to the Christian faith and her ever expanding church community.
